JEAN DE BRUNHOFF
Jean created Babar in 1931. The stories were originally told to their son Matthieu by his wife, Cecile de Brunhoff. In the early 1930s Jean learned that he had tuberculosis. This illness forced him to enter a sanitorium in Switzerland. He wrote and illustrated the Babar books while convalescing as a way to connect with his son. He died in Switzerland in 1937. Ten years after Jean's death his eldest son Laurent revived the series and published more than 50 Babar books in different formats.
